American Wirehair

In 1966, the first known American Wirehair was born in Verona, New York.  The male kitten was  one out of six barn kittens.  The distinctive features that this kitten possessed, later named Adam,  were sparse, wiry hair and every hair was crimped, coiled & springy, even his whiskers.  All American Wirehair can be traced by to Adam.

The American Wirehair are well balanced, medium to large sized, moderately muscled, rounded head, substantial muzzle and distinct whisker pads. Generally, their confirmation is similar to that of the American Shorthair.

This breed is born with a tightly curled coat and remains hard, frizzy, medium in length with a springy, tight resilient coat as it grows into adulthood.  The Wirehair comes in all varieties of colours & patterns, except those that are produced through hybridization by Siamese and Himalayan breeds.

They are similar in nature to that of the American Shorthair.  They are gentle, have an even disposition and are great with other pets & children.  They are very adaptable and make excellent pets.

Their thick, hard coat requires little grooming and comes in a profusion of colours and patterns.  The most identifiable pattern being the classic silver tabby.

American Shorthairs are noted for their good temperament and intelligence.   They will attach themselves to the family and adapt well to most situations.
