The Maine Coon is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America, and is generally regarded as a native of the state of Maine. Despite legend, these cats are NOT a cross between a cat and a raccoon but descendants of domestic cats and early Angoras (probably introduced by New England seamen).
The Maine Coon is one of the largest purebreds, heavy-boned, broad-chested, with sturdy legs. The large head has high cheekbones, a strong squarish muzzle, and large tufted ears.
The Maine Coon coat is relatively heavy and shaggy, shorter on the shoulders and longer on the belly and tail. The big paws, are heavily tufted for snow travel. As Maine Coon's were originally a working cat, the coat development allowed these cats to survive in a harsh climate.
