The distinctive feature of the American Curl, first noted in southern California in 1981, is the uniquely attractive curled ears. This misshapen ear of the American Curl is a mutated genetic trait that folds the ear backward, unlike the Scottish Fold that flops the ear forward. This gene is dominant, with NO deformities attached to it. Selective breeding began in 1983 in the USA and later granted championship status in 1986.
Curls are well balanced, medium sized, moderately muscled, rounded head, wide spread ears, substantial muzzle and distinct whisker pads. Generally, their confirmation is similar to that of the Foreign breeds.
This breed comes all colours & patterns and in both longhair & shorthair varieties.
They are alert, with gentle, even dispositions. They are very adaptable, just like other American Shorthair breeds and make excellent pets.
